TAHLEQUAH – American Indian Resource Center officials have announced that it has received funding from the Office of Indian Education for a Native teacher training program.

The American Indian Professional Education Consortium is seeking participants who have a passion for education and are excited to work in school systems with a high enrollment of American Indian students. Teacher training will be provided to equip participants to become culturally responsive teachers in such school systems. The curriculum will include culturally specific learning techniques so that they will be able to meet the learning styles and needs of Native students.

AIPEC Director Nikki Jones said the consortium is working closely with Northeastern State University staff to recruit Indian teacher candidates.

The participants will attend professional seminars with leading Indian educators in the field who will inform the most effective learning tools for students. In addition, the program provides funding for tuition and fees, immersive field
